Let me begin by saying that, once assembled, these chairs look great and are solid. I recently purchased two sets of these chairs (i.e. 4). Each set of chairs arrived in a flat box completely unassembled. I spent a long time assembling each chair. Each chair comes with a rush seat and an assembled front and back. The side seat braces and side leg braces had to be assembled and the rush seat is screwed down to the chair frame at the end of the assembly. I consider myself a pretty savvy assembler when it comes to putting things like chairs together and these chairs proved to be a enormous challenge. In a nutshell, it is extremely difficult to screw them together. The side seat braces are fastened with allen bolts that are long and require what seemed like a million turns with an allen wrench (supplied)at an awkward angle. The leg braces are secured with phillips screws, which also fasten at an awkawrd angle and I was constantly concerned about stripping the screw heads. The angle of the fastener installation is so tight that it is almost impossible to get an electric drill access to tighten the screws. I had to buy special screws to fasten the rush seats because the ones that were enclosed were not long enough. (Get screws too long and you run the risk of having them poke through the seat.) As warning to the carpentry novice, these chairs are far more difficult to put together than, for example, shelves from your local office supply store. In my opinion, assembly of these chairs requires special tools and woodworking skills. If the purchaser fits this profile, I think the chairs are great. One final point. Even though the directions don't specify the use of glue, I used wood glue and believe this made them more solid and durable.
