We bought this trash can for our kitchen. We put it about 2 inches from the wall. If you slowly step on the pedal the lid will slowly open. But if you step on the pedal with normal pressure the lid flies open, and flings back further than the back of the trash can and hits the wall making a loud bang. Loud enough to make you jump. I had to move the trash can about 4 inches from the wall to ensure that the lid would not hit it. Sometimes the trash can would get pushed back during use and then someone would go to throw something away and you would hear a "BANG". Every time we heard a bang we knew someone was throwing something away. Guests would come over, ask were the trash can is:
"oh it's in the kitchen near the..." BANG! "ok you found it" We had to train everyone in the house and the guest to either slowly step on the pedal or put your hand over the lid before stepping on the pedal.

All the literature for the trash can boasts of the slow closing lid. But not slow opening! While at the store we tested out some other simple human trash cans with the same type of lid as this one. All of them fly open. All of them bang if you have it against the wall. I eventually returned it and got a similar Simplehuman trash can with the butterfly lid. That lid does open slowly as well as close slowly.

PROS: Looks great. Good trashcan if it's going to be out in the open for everyone to see. Perfect fitting bags. Easy to empty. 10 year warranty. Having both trash and recycle is a nice feature.

CONS: Needs to be about 4" away from the wall or else the lid will hit the wall when opening and make a very loud bang.
