Bulova C4431 Edenhall Clock, Dark Oak Finish Review
The Bulova Edenhall wall clock is designed to appeal to those looking for a quality look at a budget price. It features the look and sound of a more expensive clock with a basic electronic movement that accepts a common C-cell battery.
I purchased this clock to complete an office renovation project that features an antique decor. My interior decorating eye saw an antique pendulum clock with Roman numerals against one wall in the room. The room's wood floor and furniture are a deep, rich color, so I wanted a clock that would be a pleasing accent. Amazon has many pendulum wall clocks, so I spent a good amount of time pouring through the selection. The Bulova Edenhall consistently came forward as the most pleasing. The burled mahogany accents and rich, dark oak were exactly what I envisioned for the office.
When the clock arrived, it met all my expectations. It is absolutely beautiful and I loved it the moment the top came off the box.
As another reviewer commented, the documentation is very basic and not very descriptive. For me, I didn't find this a problem. It's a clock, and the settings on the back are typical for a clock. There are two wheels on the back. One sets the time and the other sets the chime volume. There's a switch for setting the clock to either AM or PM. The clock can be set to chime only during the day or both the day and night. This is an excellent feature since I'm not interested in hearing the clock during the hours when I typically sleep. The clock is silent during the early morning hours, past 12am, and the chime turns back on early in the morning.
Personally, I fell in love with the Whittington chime. I grew up with a grandfather clock that played the traditional Westminster chime, which I like, but I found the Whittington to be so refreshing. The back of the clock has a switch that enables you to select either the Westminster or Whittington chime. The sonic quality of the chime is very good. Listening to it, I wouldn't know that it's an electronically reproduced chime. Other than the chime, the clock is virtually silent. The pendulum doesn't produce a "tick-tock" sound.
The clock features glass on the front and on the sides, which is a nice additional accent not found on many clocks in this price range. As for performance, I've had the clock for a month now and the time hasn't deviated at all from what I originally set. It appears to hold its time very well.
Set up was quite simple. The pendulum hangs from a plastic arm that protrudes from the clock movement. Simply slip the bend on the end of the pendulum into the hole on the movement arm and you're done. The back of the clock is a matching oak panel that slides in place. A full set up involves setting all the switches and the time, installing the battery, and placing the back in place. The clock hangs on a wall screw or nail mount. The only periodic maintenance is changing the battery when it wears out.
The only flaw I've noticed relates to synchronization of the chime with the actual set time. After I had the clock time and chime set, I noticed it was a few minutes off. I took the clock down and reset it, but noticed the chime was now a few minutes off. I found I was able to resolve this by taking the battery out and putting it back in. This reset everything fine and now the clock time and chime are in perfect synchronization.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Bulova Edenhall clock to either family or friends. It's a beautiful addition to my renovated office and I expect it will stay in the family for many decades. I hope to pass it to my son someday, when he's older and living on his own. In the meantime, I'll enjoy its friendly presence while I'm working at home or just relaxing with a nice book. It's a trusty companion ready to remind me of the time regardless of what time it actually is.
