I put this together over the weekend. One person, 45 minutes with breaks for changing the music on the ipod, fiddling with the stereo and retrieving the bolts from my cat. The fasteners they give you come in a little baggie of bolts. There's no cardboard backed plastic container with labels, just a little red plastic bag of bolts. No extras so you'd better find any you drop or that the cat runs off with. They must coat these with used french fry oil because whenever I turned my back my cat would be running off with one in his mouth.

Though it goes together well and I had few issues doing it myself, the instructions are laughable. They consist, in their entirety of one page with four pictures in various stages of assembly. There are no written instructions whatsoever. If these guys made a guide to learning to play the flute it would say, "Blow in one end and move your fingers up and down the holes. There! You're playing the flute!"

Just remember this to save some time and headaches. Put it all together but don't tighten it all up until you're finished or you'll have to loosen bolts for it to fit together.

Now for the measurements! Is there anything more annoying than the vague measurements they provide? I wanted to know what would fit in each shelf. So here are the assembled measurements. I rounded down to the next 1/4" so if it read 16 3/8", I'll give it as 16 1/4".

Starting from the floor to the bottom shelf/rack to the bottom of wine rack, then from the top of the wine rack shelf to the bottom of the 'middle' shelf, then from the top of the 'middle' shelf to the bottom of the top shelf;

From ground to bottom of (lowest) bottom shelf/rack - 7"

(Top of) Lowest shelf/rack to bottom of wine rack - 19 1/4"

(Top of) Wine rack shelf to bottom of next 'middle' shelf - 15 1/2"

(Top of) Middle shelf to bottom of top shelf - 14"

Choose your vendor wisely. I was ready to buy and one vendor who provided free shipping was out of stock. I went with the next vendor and paid about $35 more. The next day the cheaper vendor had stock again. Shipping took a while but it arrived unscathed. Still pleased with purchase.

KitchenAid Gourmet Hard Anodized Nonstick 10-Piece Cookware Set Review

This Kitchen Aid cookware set (manufactured by Meyer) comes with the "gourmet" tag because of the windsor style shaping of the two saucepans and the stockpot. Windsor indicates that the sides are very tall and straight until they reach the top when there is a slight flare. This configuration facilitates faster evaporation of liquids and shortens the time for reduction of sauces. In the case of the stockpot, by placing the lid on the pot you will capture all the liquids and have them return to the broth you are making. The hard-anodized outer layer over aluminum is a very easy surface to work with. I have other pieces with this finish and find it holds up wonderfully. I do not, however, put any of my cookware in the dishwasher regardless of what a manufacturer may say.

I always like to make sure of what is meant by measurements given by a manufacturer. In this case an 8 quart stockpot held eight measured quarts of water, but there was only about 3/4 inch of room left to the top of the pot. I would never fill the pot that much because of the danger of boil-over during the cooking period. I placed a five pound whole chicken and the vegetables I like to use for stock in the pot and then added 4 quarts of water. This filled the pot to within 1.5 inches of the top. By keeping the glass lid on the entire time I ended up with a very good stock and chicken cooked to perfection. I have used the 3 quart saut pan to prepare a one-dish entr e. I really like this pan because of the unusually tall sides (which are a full 3 inches tall and have no flare) because that seemed to reduce the spatter when I was saut�ing the beef for my dish. So far I have only scrambled eggs in the 8.5 inch skillet, but both saucepans have also been used. Clean-up has been a real breeze, even for the saut� pan which was not washed for several hours.

One of the things I particularly like about this set is the design of the handles. There is a combination of stainless steel on top and a silicone material on the bottom for comfort when gripping the handles. These are oven safe to 350 or 400 degrees - I've seen conflicting information about that. The handle joins the pan in a "Y" configuration which gives a really good, sturdy feel to the saucepan or skillet when it has food in it plus the handles are a little shorter than I'm used to. These handles are 8 inches long, compared to 8.75 inches for another cookware set I own. There is no accidental twisting of the pan because it is out of balance.

This set is suitable for cooking on solid plate, radiant ring, ceramic, halogen or gas stoves. My commercial gas range matches up very well with each of the pans in this set that I've used so far. The only negative comment I have is that I would have liked some kind of small pamphlet or brochure describing this set to be included with it. What I got was a business size white envelope with some sheets inside giving me the information about the set. Certainly not very inspirational! Despite that small quibble, I am looking forward to many years of cooking with this very attractive set of cookware.

*****EDIT***** March 19, 2011 - Just a short addition to say how much I am enjoying using this cookware set. The non-stick coating is the best of any of the pans I own. It has a very smooth feel to it and I haven't found anything which can't be cleaned up easily. The silicone padding on the underside of the handles is absolutely wonderful. Even though it is always a good idea to use a potholder, these handles do actually stay cooler to the touch than any of my other pans. The stockpot is so tall and narrow that it takes a little longer for water in it to come to the boil, but once it is boiling the cooking process goes very quickly. I'm speaking specifically of cooking pasta in this instance. All in all simply a wonderful set that is going to be used all the time.

First off, my friends know me as the "Crazy Fan Lady". I need to sleep with a fan and have a very narrow threshold of temperatures I can deal with. Living in Seattle, we have no air-conditioning and considering that we live in a townhouse, the upstairs gets extremely warm as the internal air-circulation is really poor. I have tried all kinds and all brands of fans and currently own three Vornados (including the 660) and the Lasko 20" Cyclone Fan. I've had fans cheap and expensive, box fans, table fans, pedestal fans and clip-on fans. The problem with most fans I've come across is two-fold: (a) They're usually pretty damn loud (b) They don't move enough air if it's not pointed directly at you.

While I love the Vornado 660, I don't think it's quiet powerful enough for a 15 x 15 living room. Also, I need to put it on a stool so that it sits by the sliding door and pulls air in. I wanted a stand-alone pedestal fan that looked nice, wasn't loud (I mean, who can play video games with the sound of wind blowing in their ears, how would you ever detect the Clickers from the Last of Us?) and could blow up a storm for those especially hot days that are becoming the norm. Initially I wanted one of those vintage-y Hunter fans, but I read that they were loud and didn't really generate or circulate much air. The Rowenta was my second choice and though INSANELY over-priced (for which I docked a star), I think it was a really good buy. It's definitely very quiet on the first and second setting. The third and turbo setting gets pretty loud but not as terrible as the Lasko Cyclone and is comparable to the Vornado 660 at the highest speed. The fan is definitely more powerful than the Vornado 660 in terms of air circulation - if I place the Rowenta in front of the sliding door pointing inwards and have another fan at the end of the room redirecting the air outwards, the room gets cool pretty fast. I think the trick is the five really thin blades that seem to just slice through air and spit it out. The one other gripe I have though is that the color is actually a dark brown and not the nice silvery color shown on the picture. I'm not docking another star though, mainly because it blends in nicely with my wood furniture but it is pretty misleading. The fan otherwise has a very sleek modern look to it, and the base is EXTREMELY heavy, so it means no rickety squeaky sounds even on carpet.

All in all, a really good purchase, lives up to it's Shhh-Silence name and produces good circulation.

UPDATE (17 September 2013)

Two months in, and I've finally concluded that this is the best fan EVER. It beats the Vornado 660 hands down in terms of silence and air circulation. I am not generally a lazy person, but I also just realized that the remote control is really useful for times when you're sitting on the couch watching a movie and suddenly it gets too cold and you don't realize that it's because there's a fan blowing because it's so quiet! I've used it almost everyday throughout summer - it doesn't get too hot in Seattle but for the days when it was about 90 degrees, the fan on the highest (not turbo) setting did a great job keeping the temperatures comfortable and did not create a sound any louder than a low hum.
