Brass Tide Clock on Cherry Wood, T.P. Review
Brass Tide Clock on Cherry Wood T.P.:
I bought this Tide Clock from the Brass Binnacle and it looks better than the pictures. The first Tide Clock that I bought the hand wouldn't work, but a call to the Brass Binnacle and they sent a new one and it works perfect. The Brass Binnacle sent a return label and all I have to do is return the clock that doesn't work. This is a tarnish proof brass clock on a 9 inch cherry wood base and is hung on the wall. This tide clock is made in Germany and is a very handsome addition to my weather related gauges that I now own.
Made in Germany by Bey-Berk International WS-077 is a perfect mate to the WS-078 that I reviewed earlier on Amazon. This clock requires a AA battery, not included, and can be set very easily from the back, it has a hour adjustment wheel, very much like on a regular clock.
To make the best of your Bey-Berk Tide Clock, you should understand a little about what causes the high and low tides. The moon is the major cause of the tides. The lunar day, the time it takes the moon to reappear at the same place in the sky, is 24 hours and 50 minutes, give or take a few seconds. Most places have two high tides and two low tides each day. Therefore, the Bey-Berk Tide Clock is designed so that its hand rotates, clockwise, once every 12 hours and 25 minutes or twice each lunar day, keeping the clock in synchrony with the moon.
But, the moon isn't the only player when it comes to tide formation, the Sun also affects the tides, but has less than half the influence of the moon. When the sun, moon, and Earth are lined up, as they are at the time of the new moon and the full moon, their influences combine and high tide is higher than normal and low tide is lower than normal.
When the sun and the moon are at right angles, as they are at the first quarter and the last quarter of the moon, the sun cancels some of the moon's effect and the range of tide is smaller than normal and the tide could arrive earlier or later than average. So, it is easier to set your tide clock on the full moon, but it can be set on the new moon as well, but remember the difference and adjust your clock at the first full moon after it arrives.
Even in the Mid-west we get tides, but not as pronounced as those on the coasts. Land tides are more of what we see in the Mid-west and they can be several inches in some areas. Also, fishing is affected by the tides, so having a tide clock, can give you an advantage as to when the fish are ready to feed.
This Bey-Berk Tide Clock WS-077 looks great and works well, so I gave it a solid 5 stars. Just remember, it takes a AA battery, and a little bit of attention as to when the moon cycle is full to set your clock accurately.
